EXP1: Animations

Below are completed animations of my studios and gallery space. Each animation focuses on a particular area of interest which is explained underneath. My animations assist in the exploration of space, scale and size. Through these videos, a relationship between the studio and gallery spaces are defined. A strong sense of cohesion is established through the deliberate consideration of materials and textures.

GENERAL BUILDING SECTION

This short animation exhibits a very brief exploration of the building in terms of it's structure and layout. the purpose of this video is to introduce the building as a whole, eluding the minor details.

UPPER STUDIO SPACE

This animation focuses on the upper studio inspired by Weiwei, based of the word 'sovereign'. the animation explores the glass skeletal structure and highlights the key focal piece of the glass staircase.

LOWER STUDIO STAIRS

This animation highlights the staircase within the lower studio. The staircase was designed off the word 'resolute'. The short video depicts the intricacy of the staircase, revealing the independent blocks which interlink to create a functional stair.

COMPLETE BUILDING EXPLORATION

This is an extra animation I created which exhibits the external and internal spaces of the studios and gallery. The video assists in measuring a sense of scale and explores the cohesion of the separate spaces.

PHOTOGRAPHS OF DEVELOPED MODEL

This is the front view of the completed model, revealing the upper studio space and the gallery space which connects the lower studio space.

This is the side view of the model, focusing on the application of custom textures upon surfaces.

EXP1: Textures and Materiality

CUSTOM TEXTURES

Below are a collection of the thirsty six textures which are inspired by words relating to materiality. This exercise enabled my to visually express the meaning of the textures. The words allowed an experimentation of literal and figurative meaning- resulting in thirty six unique and innovative patterns.

A re-evaluation of previous designs lead me to develop new concepts, and ultimately a new building. I still used the words sovereign ( above ground ) and resolute ( below ground ) to base my building off.

The piece consists of a structure constructed using reinforced steel and various types of class. This is echoed in the gallery space beneath which occupies both above and below ground. The gallery space is inaccessible to the public, however houses the artists' work which can be viewed via the transparent tube which is central for movement through the two spaces. The lower studio is constructed using steel and has an interior that consists of wood.

Stairs from previous week's experiments have been included and well integrated into the new building.
Furthermore, hand drawn textures have been applied to each section.

Bourgeois' artwork in the gallery space from viewing tube

This is a video of The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) by Frank Gherry in Toronto, Canada. I see a resemblance in the structure of using a strong skeletal frame and glass to bring light into the gallery space and draw the outside inwards

EXP1: The stair

TWO

EIGHT STAIR SKETCHES

Below are scanned copies of my stair sketches. The concept of 'resolute' is continued through he several stair sketches, maintaining a general similarity, though differing in design. Similarly,I was choosing between the concept of ;flourish' and 'sovereign'( developed from the same artwork). After consideration,I chose to develop a stair based of 'flourish'.

SKETCHES & SECTION

This is the sketch for the 'flourish' concept I decided to develop into sketchup.

This is the sketch for the 'resolute' concept I decided to develop into sketchup.

RESOLUTE STAIRS

These are the stairs i developed form the 'resolute' concept. The staircase consist of a series of independent blocks which vary in height to combine and create a block of stairs which provide a varying experience and undefined ascension path. I chose to develop these stairs for Bougeiours as the undefined path contributes to the versatility of the stair and will cater to the larger/ irregular shaped artworks to display within the studio.

FLOURISH STAIRS

These are the stairs section I decided upon. The stairs are housed by a glass cassing, and the stairs trapper towards the bottom- so as to appear suspended. There is a varying use of glass to experiment with materiality. I designed this stair with a wide center to cater to the large size of Weiwei's artworks. Furthermore, the wide center allows for his installations of greater height to pass through and sit comfortably in the studio space with ease.

EXP1: Spaces

EIGHTEEN SKETCHES

These are eighteen section sketches of separate spaces inspired by words relating to specific artworks. Initially, I experimented with the literal meaning of the word. Progressively, I  found that the figurative meaning of the word enabled a wider exploration of the concept and produced more innovative and original ideas.

CONCEPT SKETCH

This is the concept sketch which I chose to develop in Google Sketchup. the upper space is a series of cubes arranged in a stacked fashion.I decided on using a combination of timber and glass for the upper studio section.  The lower space is a group of cylindrical tubes to tapper towards the bottom. The most suitable material for the underground space would be concrete.

Above ground : Resolute
Below ground: Sovereign

SKETCH UP ATEMPT

Below is my first attempt at using Sketchup to develop a building. The lower space resulted in a more open space which invited the use of glass- however I am uncertain about the material's suitability in terms of context. Hopefully as my skills develop in using the program, i will be able to create more elaborate spaces.
